DESCRIPTION:\nCyber Security \n \n \n \nAnde Smith, President of Deer Brook Consulting, will address the current environment of threats and practices regarding cybersecurity.  This presentation will focus on the practical steps that every attorney, accountant, or financial advisor should consider to assure the security and privacy of information under their control.  \n \nThis will be oriented to both the small practitioner with little or no IT infrastructure and larger firms relying on managed services or internal IT teams for their own servers and networks.  Considerations in making use of cloud and “bring-your-own-device” service models will also be discussed.  \n \nAnde Smith is President of Deer Brook Associates, a legal and consulting firm delivering business services to in the small/medium business market. Under Ande’s leadership, Deer Brook Associates is focused on information security, privacy, and intellectual property, including technology and IT licensing. Through its leverage of information technology and lean business processes, Deer Brook Associates is able to deliver sophisticated and high quality services to its S/MB clients at competitive rates.\n \nFormerly, Ande served as COO and General Counsel of Tilson Technology Management, an Inc. 500/5000 fast growing company with focus in information security and IT consulting services, as well as telecommunications. In his role as COO, Ande was responsible for Tilson’s business operations and those of its affiliated companies, with emphasis on sustainable business processes, culture, and operating efficiency. As General Counsel, he provides legal expertise to Tilson across a range of needs. Ande also personally consulted with government and private sector clients on information security and governance, including response, remediation, and recovery activities arising from data breaches.\n \nAnde possesses diverse leadership experience, from serving as a Submarine Officer in the US Navy, to serving as the Director of Information Security for the US division of a multi-national retailer, during which time he led a team of 16 people, with programmatic responsibility for more than 100,000 associates, 1,600 retail locations, and three data centers. Ande has practiced law for more than a decade, with experience both in private practice and as in-house counsel. Having attained the rank of Captain in the US Navy’s reserve component, and he currently serves as the Navy Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officer to the State of Maine.\n \nAppointed in 2012 by Governor LePage Ande is a member of the Maine State Board of Education. He also serves in numerous municipal volunteer positions, including the North Yarmouth Charter Commission and on the Zoning Board of Appeals. He has served as the Employer Ombudsman, Maine Committee for Employer Support of Guard and Reserve, for more than eight years. Ande holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a Master of Public Affairs from the University of Connecticut, and a JD from the University of Maine School of Law. A registered patent attorney, he is also admitted to the bars of Maine and New Hampshire.\n
