This informative and practical panel discussion is designed to help advisors understand pitfalls and best practices in the drafting and use of financial powers of attorney and advance health care directives from the perspective of lawyers, financial institutions, and medical providers. We will cover the need for these documents, different types of powers of attorney, common issues that come up when using powers of attorney, the role of advance health care directives from the perspective of a hospital, and drafting and execution suggestions. Come with questions and stories to share. 

Speaker Bios

Miles Hunt is a partner at Epstein & O'Donovan, LLP in Portland, Maine, a trusts and estates firm.  His practice is focused on custom estate planning, as well as trust and estate administration.  He earned his J.D. at the University of Maine School of Law.

Colby Wallace is a shareholder at Bernstein Shur in Portland, Maine. Colby’s practice focuses on all aspects of trusts and estates planning, administration, conflict resolution, and taxation. He is admitted to practice in Florida, Maine, and Massachusetts. He earned his J.D. at the University of Maine School of Law.

Thomas Marczak is associate general counsel for MaineHealth, where he advises and provides legal counsel for MaineHealth and its members on a wide array of subjects, including patient care, patient privacy, informed consent. Thomas is also adjunct faculty at the University of Maine School of Law, where he teaches health care law and policy. He earned his J.D. at the University of Maine School of Law.

Suzanne Rende is a Senior Vice President at Key Private Bank in Portland, Maine. She works with high net worth individuals and families throughout Maine, Vermont and Florida to accomplish the transfer of their wealth effectively and efficiently specific to their goals. She is a graduate of the University of Maine and holds the CTFA designation.
